Swans -- They Just Aren't Right For the Chesapeake
Recently a species of swans have been found in the Chesapeake. You may think 'What's the big deal?'. Well, the big deal is: this species is not native to the Chesapeake. It seems these swans were being carried on a boat through the Chesapeake when they escaped (yay, swans!). So, a group of scientists, being the evil little people they generally are, took it upon themselves to rid the Bay of its non-native inhabitants. I probably wouldn't even have taken the time to write this column if my mother hadn't brought up a great point: humans can run deer out of the woods in order to provide housing for us, and it is perfectly ok, but for a small, insignificant group of swans to take up residence in the Chesapeake Bay is something so horrific we must kill them. Hah! Is it just me, or is this pathetic? Haven't we been doing this for, like, millenia? Did you know there was this species of beaver (yes, I'm going to rant on about that now) called the Giant Beaver, or Mega Beasts that lived up to about 10,000 years ago? Well, the species died out along with mammoths and sabre-toothed tigers in the last ice age. The point of this? the Giant Beaver survived through the first 22 ice ages just fine, in the 23rd, they started to die out. The cause -- humans. Coincidence?
